works exactly as I assumed t would. Plug it in and let it warm up. The only flaws are that the heating element within is less than half of the surface so it doesn't heat evenly. Also, it takes quite a while to warm up at all. I suggest plugging it in a good 30 min before you want to use it. It should also be noted that the bottom part also heats up so protect your surfaces.

Purchased this as a gift for my partner who never gets a chance to finish a cuppa whilst it's hot. He was super excited when he saw it and reports that it works very well - all today's tea and coffee stayed cosy enough to drink whilst he was busy working
